international Aliou Cisse has expressed his delight that his team has made the whole African continent proud after getting their 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign on to a winning start with a hard-fought 2-1 win against Poland in Group H on Tuesday.
An own goal by Thiago Cionek in the 37th minute put Senegal 1-0 up before Mbaye Niang capitalised on a poor back pass to double his side’s lead.
Grzegorz Krychowiak pulled a goal back for Poland on 86 minutes which was just a consolation goal.
Reacting to the win, Cisse who captained Senegal when they stunned France 1-0 in the opening game of the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan, revealed his team secured the win.
“We managed to control the game tactically and emotionally,” he said in his post-match press conference.
‘This victory means we enter the competition in the best possible way, but we know it will be a difficult match against Japan.”And on the kind of support is team are getting following the win, he said:
“I guarantee the whole of Africa is supporting us. I get phone calls from everywhere. We are proud to represent Africa.”
