COURT - JURISDICTION: What determines jurisdiction of Court to entertain a cause/matter

"It is settled principle of law that in order to determine whether a Court before which a matter pends has the jurisdiction to entertain same, the Court has to look at the plaintiff's claim before it and not the defence put forward by the defendant."
